What is the difference between a crane and a lifting device?

In the industry, the term "crane" is usually used to refer to devices used to lift loads. Cranes are normally just used to lift very heavy loads, and therefore, for smaller or lighter loads the term "lifting device" is used. This term contains a wide and very technically varied spectrum of devices.

What types of lifting devices are there?

The main difference between the varying lifting devices is their attachment point. For the majority of lifting devices, the load is hung on the attachment point and then lifted into the air. This includes, for example, the "engine lifter" which is used to lift an engine out of an automobile. This type of lifting device can also be called a "mini crane". Another type of lifting device is the "lifting table". Here loads are lifted to the desired height, after being placed on the device from the bottom.

Quality Great offers Personalized Lifting tables can be stationary or mobile, and are fitted with an electric or electro-hydraulic lifting device. For manual operations, a mobile lifting table significantly eases the workload.

Where are lifting devices used?

Lifting devices are used for comparatively lightweight to relatively heavy loads. The biggest advantage of using a lifting device is their mobility, as they can be used in areas that are inaccessible to a regular crane. Mobile lifting tables are especially useful in a single user workplace. For manual folding presses or plate shears, a lifting table can help ensure continuous work without the worker having to constantly bend over. Workers can get their products to the desired height with help of the lifting table. Due to the type of work that they are primarily used for, these are also sometimes called "machine lifters". However, this term can sometimes be confusing, because they are not used to lift machines, but solely for the lifting of loads to the required height of a machine. Stationary lifting tables are mainly used for the loading of containers or lorries.

Other types of lifting devices

One of the most known lifting devices in the industry is the device for lifting pallets. With the help of this device, several hundred pound loads can easily be moved around the factory. Most of the lifting devices can be universally deployed for a large variety of loads. However, there are also devices with specialised functions. For example, the vacuum lifting device has strong suction cups and is used specifically for lifting, positioning and moving pieces of glass. Other lifting devices work with permanent magnets, electromagnetic magnets, clamps, grips or baskets.

Providers of lifting devices

Several companies have specialised in the manufacturing of lifting devices. Some of the most recommended suppliers include HYMO-LIFT, GRUSE or SCHMOLEY. Mini cranes are available from UPLIFTER, MAEDA, UNIC and STEINWEG.
