A double-wheeled bench grinder is made out of an enclosed central electric motor that is fixed onto a table or workbench. On both sides of the electric motor there is a grinding disc. The grinding discs are enclosed to ensure safe operation and that the dust and splintering resulting from the grinding are safely contained. A channel is available for the comfortable and secure operation of a double-wheeled bench grinder. The workpiece is placed onto the channel and then manually guided along the rotating grinding disc. The grinding discs are clamped in, in the correct way for the particular function needed. A double-wheeled bench grinder operates using two grinding discs that run simultaneously. This construction has several advantages. If pre or post-grinding is necessary, the double-wheeled bench grinder ensures that the switching between one work step to the other is simple. It is also very energy efficient. The double formation of the machine also doubles the momentum, which reduces the energy use of the electric motor.

Working with a double-wheeled bench grinder requires high safety awareness. The rotation speed and momentum of a double-wheeled bench grinder is very high, and therefore has a high risk of injury associated with it. It is necessary to have extensive safety equipment such as protective glasses and respiratory protection. The use of gloves is somewhat problematic.

Normal industry gloves are not suitable for the operation of a double-wheeled bench grinder. Minimal amount of contact with a rotating grinding disc can result in the whole hand of the operator being pulled into the machine. However, there are suitable gloves available for specialised work using bench grinders. When these specialised gloves contact the rotating grinding disc, their surface layer is take off, which prevents the pulling in motion.

Next to reparative grinding, for example sharpening or drilling, a bench grinder is mainly used for to improve the aesthetic or safety related qualities of a workpiece. A common process conducted by a double-wheeled bench grinder is the stripping of gutted, welded or injection moulded products. With the exception of diamond and knife sharpening, a double-wheeled bench grinder is generally not a machine found in a production line.

The operation and storage of a double-wheeled bench grinder is of critical importance. With new cheaply bought machines, inferior components are assumed within this range. Next to the processing of high-end individual products, the ease of maintenance is another assessment criterion for the quality of a double-wheeled bench grinder.

Established manufacturers of double-wheeled bench grinders are REMA, ESB, SCHÄFFER and GREIF.
