SCM ME35 Edgebander

Edgebanders are the heart of modern edge processing. They transform rough cut edges into visually sophisticated surfaces. The most important component of the edgebander is the gluing unit, which is used to glue the edgeband to the trimmed edge. In addition, there are aggregates for joining, milling, sanding, polishing, etc. Edgebanders are also available in double-sided designs for industry and trade. Surplex, the specialist for used machinery, offers used edgebanders with varying degrees of automation, feed rates, edgeband thickness, etc. Buy first-class machines from HOMAG, HOLZHER, BIESSE, etc. at fair prices - even the recent models!

An edge banding machine (frequently referred to as an edgebanding machine, edge bander, edgebander or edging machine) is used to adhere edging to wooden materials which have been processed into panels. Veneers, wood edge strips or PVC can be applied to the edges of the panel material, depending on the requirements. An edge bander consists of a range of drive units housed within a metal enclosure. An adjustable bridge helps keep the panels in the correct position. A conveyor belt is fitted into the bridge and housing and prevents the materials slipping during the gluing process. The conveyor belt itself consists primarily of a driven conveyor chain and pressure rollers, which press the edge material against the adhesive site.

  • Gluing of edge material
  • Application of veneers, wood strips or PVC
  • Special versions exist for a variety of fields

The edge feed slides the edging material up to the panel. The PVA adhesive is melted at the gluing station and is applied to the area requiring edging. The edging material is then pressed onto the panels using the pressure rollers. Once it has been moved into position, the infinite edging is cut by the shearing scissors and the protruding ends are exactly trimmed using the joining unit. The planing of the top and bottom side is performed by the flush milling cutter and the shaping cutter profiles the edge. If PVC material is used for the edging, the profile pulling blade unit scrapes a thin layer off the milled profile to remove marks left by the machining process. The removal of the adhesive residue and superfluous edging is the job of the surface scraper. The final step involves the edge being polished by the buffing unit and a spray system applies a protective substance.

Edge banding machine in action

Hot air edge bander equipment

The simplest of the edge banders is the hot air edge bander. This woodworking machine processes hot glue-coated thin edges up to 1mm thick with the adhesive being melted by a hot air gun. This machine is suitable for operations where it is needed for only a few hours a month. Other thicker edging material cannot be applied using this equipment.

Entry-level machines

Operations requiring an edge banding machine for less than 5 hours on average per week and which do not need to process 3mm-thick PVC should opt for entry-level machines with a standard frequency motor and joining unit.

Semi-professional machines

Operations hoping to use the machinery for 4 hours on average per day are what would be classed as semi-professional edge banding users. In this class, powerful high-frequency motors would be a good choice. For many years, machines were primarily made with a belt drive and standard frequency motors.

But the market has since changed and manufacturers are now opting for high-frequency motors. In the case of used machinery, however, there are still many affordable versions featuring standard frequency motors. Most edge banders in this class are capable of processing PVC edging material at 3 mm thick. It is important to ensure the machines are fitted with suitable profile cutting blades to smooth the edges. Corner rounding units are rare to find in this machinery class but are convenient for rounding off the front and back edges.

Machinery for industrial production

Machines of this class can be programmed to automatically adhere and rework almost every type of edging material. Automatic edge banding machines are constructed for high-performance production and can be used in multi-shift operation at high working speeds.

A range of edge bander manufacturers have established themselves on the market. These particularly include suppliers, such as BIESSE, BRANDT, FRAVOL, IMA, OTT and STEFANI. HOMAG edge banders and HOLZ-HER edge banders are also highly recommended. Four other manufacturers worth mentioning include EBM, FORMAT, HEBROCK and NEY. In most cases, edge banding machines from these manufacturers can be purchased second-hand without any issue. Their top-quality processing capabilities enable used edge banding machines for wood to continue to produce highly precise woodworking results even after a very large number of operating hours.

So, you would like to buy a second-hand edge bander machine? Then Surplex is the right place to be. We hold many regular industrial auctions in which you will have the chance to acquire high-quality second-hand edge banders at attractive prices. The edge banding machines for sale are generally in a good condition and, where possible, are inspected by Surplex prior to sale to test functionality.

Our services

We also offer you the opportunity to peruse image material to get a better idea of the condition of the used edge banders before you make your decision. However, this is not a substitute for a visual inspection, which we can facilitate in many cases. If you have any questions about buying a used edge bander, please contact Surplex Customer Care. A member of the team will be glad to answer your questions about buying second-hand and provide information and advice.

We also recommend signing up to our Newsletter, which will keep you up-to-date about newly available machines and ensure you never miss the perfect deal on an edge bander for sale.
