It is necessary to copy documents in all areas of production. Therefore, copiers are very important when wanting to create or duplicate current correspondence, working documents, shipping and delivery documents and other things. A copier is available in a variety of sizes and designs. Used machines are often able to undertake all required tasks and are available at a low cost. The copiers used today work on the principles of xerography or inkjet copying. The xerography was introduced in Germany over 60 years ago and is found in many offices.

Modern casings are almost entirely made out of plastic. A drum is located inside the machine with a light sensitive layer. The actual copying process is undertaken by taking a picture of the original, which is located on the active layer. A laser printer works a bit differently and its composition is somewhere between a scanner and a laser printer. The rollers expose the document and then toner is used, which stays on the drum due to an electrostatic pull. There are single component and double component toners. The toner image is then transferred onto the paper or film, where after the toner needs to be fixed. A copier is an office machine with a very long life, but only if it is properly maintained. There are two types of copiers: analogue and digital. Digital copiers can undertake all other tasks such as scanning, printing and faxing. A number of additional functions are also possible, such as the production of brochures, flyers and other products. It also contains an automatic feed. A duplex unit turns the paper automatically and allows for double-sided printing. The cartridges and trays can take up different paper sizes. Sorting devices are used to sort the copiers according to the requirements. Hole punches and staplers allow for the copies to be organised and bunched together.

Powerful copiers with an automatic document feeder, sorter, duplex unit and stapler are found in most offices that require large amounts of copies to be made. That means that information required in large quantities can be produced easily, economically and quickly. Large copiers are often found in architecture offices and in copy shops. In copy shops, it is possible to copy documents either as an analogue or digital process. Therefore, a copy shop can provide more formats.
