HAAS Inc. is the largest manufacturer of machine tools in the Western world. It is a relatively young company and was only founded back in 1983. An extensive product range and modern production techniques mean the company is able to provide highly functional yet affordable devices. This is even more impressive if one considers that 80% of HAAS production is conducted in the USA.

Today, the HAAS range covers: vertical and horizontal mills, CNC lathes and rotary tables/indexers.

HAAS produces a wide range of CNC machines: lathes, horizontal and vertical milling machines and many other specialist models for highly-specific applications. Whatever a customer needs, HAAS will have fast and productive machines to offer, some of which combine a range of applications for an especially good price-performance ratio.

Vertical milling machines

The main selection criteria between HAAS’s vertical mills is the spindle holder. HAAS produces machines for the SK40 and SK 50 standard spindle heads and there is a wide range to choose between.

HAAS produces 18 different series of vertical mills compatible with the SK 40 Standard. The company’s machines can thus be used for turning lengths of between 762 and 3810 millimetres. A range of additional features for increasing productivity and precision make it simple to find the right vertical mill for a customer’s exact needs.

HAAS currently produces ten vertical machines compatible with SK 50 spindles, which are capable of working on components measuring 1016 – 3810 mm in height and 600 – 813 mm in length.

HAAS also manufactures an additional range of vertical milling machines which are far more specialised than the standard lines already mentioned.

These include:

  • Mould machines
  • Drill/tap/mill centres
  • Mini mills
  • Regular milling machines
  • Gantry/router machines
  • Super-speed high-performance mills

Such a selection ensures all speed/productivity and specialist requirements can be met. See below for an overview of the various types:

Horizontal milling machines

Horizontal machines can be seen as a sort of successor to the boring mill and HAAS produces a total of two models. They feature durable designs and much more favourable prices compared to similar vertical mills, however they are less powerful when it comes to productivity and precision. The HAAS EC630 is one of the most popular second-hand CNC horizontal machining centres made by the company. Mould-making is by no means ideal on horizontal mills but these machines have nevertheless been producing outstanding results for decades, which makes HAAS horizontal mills an ideal choice for single-series productions.

The company supplies two models:

HAAS EC-1600
The EC-1600 can process workpieces measuring 1626 x 1270 x 813 m³. Power of 30 PS and spindle speeds of 7500 make these machines entirely adequate for low- to mid-range production.

HAAS EC-1600 ZT-5AX
This machine is based on the same basic bodywork as the EC-1600. It can process across five axes and thus create highly complex contours.

CNC lathes

HAAS manufactures a range of six different CNC lathe models.

Category Toolroom lathe 2-Axis Super-Speed Dual Spindle Y-Axis Large-Through-Bore Types TL-1 ST-10 ST-20SS DS-30 ST-10Y ST-45 TL-2 ST-15 ST-20SSY DS-30Y ST-20Y ST-45L ST-20 DS-30SS DS-30SS ST-20SSY ST-50 ST-20SS DS-30SSY DS-30SSY DS-30Y ST-55 ST-25 ST-30SS DS-30SSY ST-30 ST-30SSY ST-25Y ST-30SS ST-30Y ST-35 ST-30SSY ST-40 ST-35Y ST-40L ST-45 ST-45L ST-50 ST-55

The models are:

Toolroom lathes

These highly-precise CNC lathes are available in two models offering a maximum capacity of 406 mm (diameter) and either 762 or 1219 mm (cutting length).

2-axis lathes

There are eight models of these high-performance lathes enabling cutting lengths of 406 – 2032 mm and cutting diameters of 356 – 648 mm.

Super Speed

The six Super-Speed models are even faster than their 2-axis cousins. They can work on components measuring 533 – 584 mm in length and 256 – 406 mm in diameter.

Dual spindle mills

The two-spindle design makes it possible to process several workpieces simultaneously on one machine, which increases productivity yet again. HAAS has four machines in their range capable of workpieces with cutting lengths of 584 – 660 mm and cutting diameters of 406 – 457 mm.

Y-Axis

HAAS supplies an especially large selection of CNC lathes in their Y-axis line. A total of nine machines are available, which can work on components measuring 406 – 584 mm in length and 305 – 457 in diameter.

Large-Through-Bore

HAAS models ST45, ST50 and ST55 can be used to create wide holes within turned parts. The machines feature a diameter capacity of 648 mm and can process cutting lengths of 118 – 2032 mm.

AAS also manufactures a range of bar feeders to increase productivity and efficiency.

Rotary tables and indexers

Rotaries/indexers are a simple way of expanding the functions of a CNC mill.

HAAS produces a total of eight indexing tables capable of holding up to four spindle heads.

There are five rotary modules available. In the 5-axis line there are twelve rotary modules which are ideal for expanding the range of possible applications and can lead to massive gains in productivity.

Since HAAS only began production of lathes and mills in 1983, the models available on the second-hand market are very young. The US-based company had strong competition in Germany to contend with but has made great strides over the past few years, which is reflected in the volume of second-hand devices on offer. There are a great number of used HAAS VF2s for sale, which are 40-taper standard vertical machining centres (XYZ: 762 x 406 x 508 mm). Other popular machines include used the HAAS VF4 vertical machining centre (XYZ: 1270 x 508 x 635 mm) and the HAAS SL10 CNC lathe. In addition, there are many HAAS SL10s for sale on the used marketplace.

HAAS mills and lathes are still not considered top-of-the-line, which is reflected in the modest prices they command (top-scale CNC mills from the mid-1990s made by HAAS can be sourced for as little as 5000 euros in a used condition).

HAAS does offer a wide selection of optional extras for their used machinery (including the popular the HRT310 rotary unit, which requires an existing HAAS mill with its own), but the prices for brand-new modules are extremely high. For example, one indexing table can set you back well over 15,000 euros, which is why any prospective buyer should fully weigh the pros and cons of acquiring a used HAAS machine.

HAAS customer service is exemplary and they provide a comprehensive range of spare parts. However, no matter how attractive the price, any used HAAS device should be thoroughly inspected before making a purchase decision.
