Proven broaching machines for various broaching processes

Explanation of the term "broaching"

Broaching is a part of the cutting process in metalworking. The process of metal-cutting is generally split into "broaching" and "smoothing". Broaching primarily deals with the removal of excess material and smoothing, following this process, deals with the fine workings of clearing up the surface area. The term "broaching machine" refers to the piece of equipment that shapes the profiles of workpieces. Working on the profile of a workpiece is split into two parts: the interiors, where only the inner side of the profile is broached; and the exteriors, where the external side of the profile is broached. Each process requires a separate machine.

Why is it important to work on the profile?

Profile press equipment is not necessary when working on single pieces or a small-scale series. The dimensional accuracy of manufactured products is usually not sufficiently precise. It is only possible to further process a workpiece with extruding contours using a broaching machine. By using this machine, the desired contours can be applied to solid profiles and standard materials.

Typical products manufactured with a broaching machine

A standard product, for which a broaching machine is used, is a pipe with internal threads. Broaching machines are commonly used to produce internal teeth, hexagon sockets and keyways. All these products have a large variety of uses. Other commonly broached products are, for example, cylinder locks for doors.

Working with a broaching machine

Broaching machines are milling machines that produce high quality products. In most cases, it is useful to have a trained machine mechanic working the machine. Depending on the dimensions of the broaching machine, assistants can be employed to help run the machine. Trained assistants can be employed to operate fully automated machines that produce small pieced products, such as cylinder locks. Qualified specialists, such as engine fitters, should be the only workers allowed to maintain, repair and programme the machine.

Operating a broaching machine

One has to differentiate between broaching machines used for single products and those used for mass production. Broaching machines used for a single product and small-scale series are made by specialist manufacturers, who build the machine to fit the specific requirements needed for a particular product. The other group of broaching machine operators are paid service contractors.

Providers of broaching machines

An interesting manufacturer of broaching machines is AUMAT. When buying a broaching machine for the internal parts of workpieces, it is important to make sure that the ceilings are high enough because it has to be vertically positioned. Recommended providers of broaching machines for interior work are: FORST und KLINK. When buying a broaching machine for the exterior parts of workpieces, it is important to make sure that there is enough floor space, as these need to be horizontally positioned. Recommended providers of broaching machines for exterior work are: FORST, HAHNDORF, STANKO, LOCH und CARDINAL
